Recipe

Mezcal Paloma

Mezcal, fresh citrus, and grapefruit soda over ice. Mexico's most popular cocktail, made better with smoke.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz mezcal
  • 0.5 oz fresh lime juice
  • 0.5 oz fresh grapefruit juice
  • 3 oz grapefruit soda (Jarritos or Squirt)
  • Pinch of kosher salt
  • Tajin or salt (for rim)
  • Grapefruit slice (for garnish)
  • Ice

Instructions

  1. Prep the glass: Run a lime wedge around the rim of a highball glass and dip in Tajin or kosher salt. Fill with ice.

  2. Build: Add mezcal, lime juice, grapefruit juice, and a pinch of salt directly to the glass. Stir briefly.

  3. Top and serve: Top with grapefruit soda and stir once more. Garnish with a grapefruit slice.

Notes

Mexico's most popular cocktail, adapted for mezcal. The grapefruit and smoke are natural partners. If you want more tartness, squeeze in an extra wedge of grapefruit. A salted rim is traditional but Tajin adds a pleasant chili heat.
