Recipe

Oaxacan Old Fashioned

The classic Phil Ward creation from Death & Co. Reposado tequila and mezcal stirred with agave syrup and mole bitters over a single large cube.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 oz reposado tequila
  • 0.5 oz mezcal
  • 1 barspoon agave syrup
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 dash mole bitters
  • Orange peel (for garnish)
  • Ice

Instructions

  1. Stir: Combine tequila, mezcal, agave syrup, and both bitters in a mixing glass. Add ice and stir for 20–30 seconds until well chilled and diluted.

  2. Serve: Strain over a large ice cube in a rocks glass.

  3. Garnish: Express an orange peel over the glass, run it around the rim, and rest it on the ice.

Notes

Created by Phil Ward at Death & Co in New York. The mezcal plays a supporting role here, adding a smoky finish that lingers after the tequila's warmth. If you can't find mole bitters, Angostura alone works well. Adjust the agave syrup to taste.
